Review Jamie's Italian Norwich eating out in the city
Eating out is a treat. A meal in a restaurant is a lovely way to spend an evening and one of my favourite things to do. These days we tend to eat out as a matter of irregular course; it's great to try out new places as opposed to returning to the same old haunt each time. When Jamie's Italian got in touch to ask if we'd like to come along one evening I was only too pleased to pop along with C. Jamie Oliver changed my life; when I heard about his 30 minute meals book I was intrigued and asked for it for Christmas. We cooked our way through many of the recipes and it totally changed the way I understood food, understood flavours and gave me a boost of confidence to try new things. It's a real possibility I'd still be eating ready meals out of a tray without that book.

I had a look at the menu online and was pleased to see some obvious choices to suit my taste as well as lots of dishes which are ones I wouldn't mind trying so it was a 'safe' bet; crowd pleasers and more adventurous dishes alike. It surprised me to notice that Jamie's Italian is within the Royal Arcade shopping centre in Norwich city centre. This threw me somewhat as I assumed that all the shops there were very small but true enough, the restaurant was there when we arrived. (I had the fear that somehow I'd made a mix up and it was elsewhere, if anyone can make this kind of blunder it's me!). Apologies for the poor quality photographs, my camera really doen't like low light.

We chose a Tuesday evening to go on the basis that weekends will be busy and it's a treat to eat out during the week. Good plan. The restaurant was super plush and what I would classify as 'themed'; being everything was in keeping with each other, nice continuity in interior decoration. Even the toilets were styled. In fact the toilets were amazing, really swish and (most importantly) clean.

What did I eat, you may wonder? Well, for starters I was toying with spinach and ricotta croquettes but in the end I chose the Italian Pate Bruschetta. It tasted particularly nice but personally I thought two rounds of bruschetta would have been more suitable for the generous serving of pate. C likes to indulge in things I don't like in restaurants; I presume because he doesn't often get to eat them and home but maybe also as there is no chance of me pestering to try his dish. With that in mind he ordered Garlic and Chilli Prawns which he thought tasted really good.

Onto mains. My insatiable appetite for pork belly overruled any desire for trying something new so I ordered Gennaro's Famous Porchetta which also featured oozy polenta, pickled pear and watercress. I don't think I've eaten polenta before but it was definitely something I'd try again (see, always discovering new culinary delights with Jamie) and made for a really tasty plate of food. More pickled pear would have been good but since getting into pickles I have to say more is more. C opted for the Fresh Crab Spaghetti, the large size but we both agreed it didn't look all that large and the crab did seem to get lost in all the spaghetti so perhaps a little underwhelming.

We had room for dessert so had a ponder over the menu. Upon entering the restaurant I saw a cake which smelled deliciously of orange, quite heavenly. I was almost, almost about to order it (orange blossom polenta cake) but then... Apple and blackberry pavlova was my selection; since when have I ever been able to skirt round the lure of meringue and cream?! It was wonderfully light, tasty and sweet. I could have eaten another, easily.... so good! C chose the Molten Chocolate Praline Pudding, going against usual form, avoiding the Brownie. He can never usually resist a brownie.

The restaurant is a delight; making such a great place to eat out either in the midst of a day out shopping in the city or for an evening out. The décor made me smile a lot, it was warm, inviting and fascinating. The menu* offered a lot of choice even to the fussiest of diners and the prices seemed to be about in line with comparable high street alternatives. We considered the portion sizes to be perhaps a little on the small side, but I'm a known greedy-guts so it made a change not to be rolled out of a restaurant. The service was wonderful and attentive but not smotheringly so, the servers were all polite and friendly with a warm and personal manner. We were made to feel most welcome.

*The menu at the Norwich restaurant was a new one on trial, so I believe
Thanks to Jamie's Italian for inviting us along and subsidising our meal. All opinions my own.

  2. I've been told by a few different people who have been there that although the food was good the service was terrible and the staff had attitude problems - perhaps they've since had some customer service training or a change of staff.

  3. This really is an excellent review. You've covered everything, phrased things positively but have raised points you think could be better and unlike many reviews I have read over the years which have a hint of being none too realistic due to it being sponsored this one is believable and helpful. I would give this place a go if I were in Norwich!x
