The lost joy of gardening

Thursday, May 11, 2017

There's something uplifting about flowers. Days when the sun shines, the birds sing merrily and the world feels like a nicer place. With so many gardens now in full swing, taking an evening walk is a joy to pass along the lane and admire the efforts people have gone to with planting. Shrubs in flower, bulbs errupting everywhere and climbers in bloom, the colours and shapes are wonderful. You can really tell where a keen gardener lives. Some of the displays are idyllic and worthy of an applause. The concept of designing and maintaining a garden which offers something new in every season appears to be a thing of the past, with young families especially looking for just a patio or a plain lawn. Easy to maintain.
But a garden is such a luxury, somewhere to relax, enjoy and tend. Modern life favours shortcuts instead of long term rewards, sitting on the sofa instead of getting your hands dirty. Cleanliness instead of mucky jobs. Such a shame, that many children these days wont grow up with any affection for the great outdoors, not learning how to care for life to make it grow and thrive.
