A visit to Castle Acre Priory

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

One place that's been on our agenda to visit for years and years was Castle Acre Priory near Swaffham. Since becoming English Heritage members a few weeks ago it made sense to finally make our trip here to explore and spend some time in the Priory. I'll be honest and say that I didn't imagine there would be quite as much as there would be in terms of exhibits and structure.

The indoor exhibits are particularly interesting and there is no shortage of information. The audio tour was excellent and co-ordinates really well with traversing the grounds on foot. There were chapters exploring more about specific things which I didn't listen to (notice the threatening clouds) but it's something I'm looking forward to continuing with on our next visit - in sunshine!
The remains of the structure are in fabulous condition when you get up close; something you can't fully appreciate from a distance

Of course, things came to a conclusion with the dissolution of the monasteries thanks to Henry VIII and to prohibit a resurgence the Priory was robbed of much of it's material, rendering it an incomplete shell.  It's amazing how it has survived so well since then.

There is a wonderful indoor area too - though sadly half was shut due to vandalism. It makes me so angry that anyone would do this. I don't want to give too much away about the Priory as I would instead recommend that you visit to make the most of this wonderful monument from the past which lives on.

The grounds and building are kept immaculately, it has to be said. It was so neat and tidy. Even on a grey day it was a great visit, the clouds gave an ominous atmosphere!

Outside the visitor centre there was a beautiful garden full of plants where I took plenty more pictures of the flowers and wildlife but I'll have to share them another day. Our visit was such a happy one and I'm excited to return!

We bought our English Heritage membership with Tesco Clubcard vouchers which was a brilliant way to ensure we have plenty of exciting little trips out to new places! Any recommendations?
