A couple of weeks ago we headed out for a meal the Willow House Inn at Watton. It's not somewhere we'd been before and I chose it based on the Tripadvisor reviews along with the menu and the fact that it's a beautiful building – who knew there was a thatched, sixteenth century, grade two listed Inn on Watton high street? I'd never spotted it before.

Being December, it was prime Christmas party season and so there were a few tables set up for groups and of course, plenty of Christmas decorations. I thought the dining room looked beautiful; cosy, snug, full of character and a festive delight. Alas, the low level lighting does not work so well for photography and so I apologise for the horrendously dark and grainy pictures.

What did we eat? For starters I chose the soup which was carrot and coriander soup which allowed me extra of the lovely warm bread rolls. It was really good and I'd choose it again.

Meanwhile, C chose the whitebait, which is a favourite of his. I thought it was plated in a pleasing way and there was a generous portion.

When I see duck on a menu it's pretty hard to pass it up so I was most excited to eat my duck and plum plate, while C ordered neck of lamb which he enjoyed. We shared the vegetables and dauphinoise style potatoes. My only qualm was that I would have preferred the potatoes to be softer but this is personal taste and I'm sure they were cooked fine.

In a rare turn of events we were both too full to even consider perusing the dessert menu (has this ever happened before?) so we stuck to the safety of coffee which rounded off the evening nicely.

I'd recommend the Willow House Inn for a pleasant evening meal out in Watton. It's always tricky to know where to eat somewhere but in Watton this is my top choice.
