Marking 7 years of blogging

Thursday, January 04, 2018

To say that perseverance alone brings results is a lie. I note that Monday marked the 7th anniversary of starting to blog and over the last fortnight I'd been giving some serious thought to whether it will be continuing. I've become worn down by so much of the media overshare these days; of white smiles, nipped in waists, flawless skin and the pouts.
I don't like the way that things have gone in society - generally, on almost every level. I hate that people don't take responsibility for themselves; in their actions, the role models they become, their health, language, relationships, children, morals, I could go on (and on and on). Never have I pretended to be a people person; my predisposition to silence and peace relies on a certain level of detachment from prolonged socialising.
Girls are dying to become women before mid teens, dog owners don't clean up after their animals, drivers consider it fine to dismiss the speed limit. It's all just wrong. Its like my itchy bobble hat, a bout of tinnitus, a broken arm. Something you can't shake off and ignore for long before it returns to the forefront of your mind and plagues your every waking thought. I am so sick of it all.

I read a book called The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud which describes the woman upstairs as quietly going about her life but is angry, so angry about the way things are. I can completely identify with this; I'm efficient, busy, ticking things off lists, dutifully keeping everyone else happy but under the surface just seething. It doesn't take much to set me off on a rant.

My Twitter feed is a checklist of Brexit, politics, news (mostly bad and/or fake), complaints, sexualised images, and THANKFULLY plenty of nature and positivity. I never set out to start a riot and I have no momentum alone but it seems to make it all the more important that what I put out there is the message I want to spread. Let's be quiet, behave and appreciate the world around us.
I'll get back in my box now.
Take care,
Sophie
