Being kind to yourself

Proceeding from benevolence that's one definition of kind.

You hear about people being kind to others, but being kind to yourself is something often overlooked. I try to remind people. Be kind to yourself!
But what does being kind to yourself entail? Well, I thought I'd muse over what I mean by being kind to myself.

Cut yourself some slack

Don't expect superhuman efforts all the time. With ebb and flow, nothing can be full throttle continuously. If you're going to put in a monster effort at one point then a rest has to be taken at another. That's just fact and shouldn't be questioned by yourself or anyone else. However, this does mean that you should also give yourself a proper kick up the backside when you know you're just not getting on with life. Don't rest on your laurels.

Listen to your body

If you're feeling off colour then maybe it's time to rest up rather than pushing on. Sometimes a gentle exercise or fresh air will mend you. If you're tired, sleep. Do what you need.

Congratulate

As you would with anyone else's successes then acknowledge the highs. Reached a target? Hurrah! Worked really hard but it didn't work out? Well done, maybe it'll happen next time. Reward progress. Indulge in positivity and don't feel embarrassed by what drives you. Celebrate good things.

Treat yourself (fairly)

Ah, this one is the trickiest. Treats in moderation. Yes I like cake, crisps, biscuits and sweets. Perhaps what makes me like them so much is that they're an infrequent treat and I really savour them when I do eat some. It wasn't kind to myself to eat too much of this; in fact they weren't fun at all when their effects were making me feel lethargic, lousy and lumpy. A little treat here and there has been so much better.

Live up to your own expectations - not those of others

So what if everyone else has preconceived ideas about your life. Once you're an adult then it's free rein time and you owe no explanations. Trust your instinct, trust your judgement and don't let anyone tell you you're wrong. Nobody is superior. Accepting that you are in control of your own path is being kind to yourself instead of beating yourself up about not living up to someone else's ideals.

Those are just my thoughts on the subject.

In case you missed my news last week: I've been included as a finalist for the Country Style Blog Award for 2018 and you only have a little window to vote so I'd really love it if you took the time to lend your support by voting here. If you have done so already then THANK YOU ever so much.

Take care and be kind to yourself,
Sophie
