On Friday we took a rare weekday day off and by off I mean a total shunning of all duties except watering the greenhouse first thing and walking Lincoln. After that it was left to us to kick up our heels and do exactly as we pleased to celebrate our wedding anniversary. First stop slightly off route was to eat a super tasty breakfast - in fact it was the best full English we've eaten in forever, Creake Abbey Cafe is where you need to head for a high quality, delicious plate of local goodness.
Having filled up and had a lovely coffee we drove back to Fakenham then on towards Cromer. Our most favourite walk is a circular from Cromer to Sheringham which I've blogged about on a few occasions before but we haven't been in years and it felt special to return to
The weather has been a right unpredictable mess lately and Friday was a foggy one, hence a lack of distance in any of the pictures! It certainly felt atmospheric. Here's the beach walk back to Cromer from Sheringham which is a lovely peaceful stretch although it must only be done at low tide as there isn't much clearance of water in some places and even then a few little leaps over streams is needed to avoid wet feet.


The fog kept the crowds at bay.





A warning sign about brown tailed moths hatching out of their webby sacks in the trees noted their caterpillary spines can fall out and cause severe itching and rashes. I was a little edgy.
I spotted one, then two, then they were everywhere so I made a swift exit!

This is part two of my favourite walk; the Norfolk Coast Path between Cromer and Sheringham. I left us upon Beeston Regis nature trail just before the big hill (it's huge for flat old Norfolk) and so the path continues up over the hill and down into the town of Sheringham.

The view from the top of the hill is a real treat; it's not often you get such a sight round these parts.

 

Having a wander around Sheringham is lovely, it's a small place really but if you're after chips and an ice cream you are well catered for! There are plenty of nice independent shops to explore as well.

The way back to Cromer that we enjoy does require forward planning; walking back along the beach is delightful but you do have to ensure that the tide is well out so you don't get caught out. The distance isn't all that far, I guess around two miles and it simply flies by. Empty beaches are always a luxury for a big kid like me; the ability to skip around with maybe the odd cartwheel thrown in for good measure without a soul in sight (hopefully).

I'm so excited to be sharing my favourite walk with you today! There are a fair few photographs which I hope will make you feel like you've tagged along with me and seen the sights (and just maybe be inspired to head along yourself).

The walk is a circular one from Cromer to Sheringham along the Norfolk Coast path (which takes an inland route) and then walking back along the beach to Cromer. As I took far too many pictures I've split this into two posts to keep it manageable.

I'm not entirely sure where the official start of the Norfolk coast path is in Cromer, but where we pick it up is beyond Manor Farm Campsite – which I've camped at many times over the years, it's a great place, lovely camping fields and marvellous modern facilities, it comes highly recommended by me if you're looking to camp at Cromer.

The Norfolk coast path is a well walked route, when we walked this section of it mid September it had been trimmed back a treat but I believe it is kept in good order all year round. I adore all the perfectly British paths and tracks: green hedges which sometimes meet overhead, well walked dirt trails and grass growing here there and everywhere.

No matter the current or recent conditions there is always a risk of encountering a bit of mud at Roman Camp which was non-existent when we visited this time but has been squelchy on previous visits. We love this walk so much we've done it around half a dozen times over the years and know that it's one which we'll enjoy time after time. The different seasons bring new sights and a different feeling but the offer of fresh air and a good stretch of the legs always remains.

The walk along the Norfolk coast path is apparently 5 miles but quite honestly it never feels this long, the distance is nothing at all, the time simply flies by ( a little too quickly if you ask me). You emerge back out at the coast at Beeston Regis, ready to go over the 'big hill'. This is where I'll leave it for now, but I'll share the rest soon.
