Blue tits nesting
Wednesday, May 04, 2016
Back in earliest spring C put up three bird boxes in the garden, along with two feeders and a little bath. We want this year to be wildlife friendly. This weekend we were rewarded with spying not one, but two boxes in use. Two pairs of blue tits are going about their business building nests and we had the pleasure of watching them carefully inspecting one of the boxes, the surrounding area and making it home.
What a joy to see them peeking out of the box. They don't seem fazed at all by our presence, although we are keeping away and trying not to disturb them. This box is conveniently placed so we can see it from the kitchen and I'm very much hoping that we continue to see our visitors for months to come. Our mossy patch of lawn is serving one purpose for the good at least... Making good bedding for the little nest box. It's times like this I wish Lincoln was a hairy dog that malted, so that we could peg out clumps of hair to the washing line for the birds to take.
The third box is out of sight but we glimpsed a couple of birds flying out so our confidence is high in this also being occupied. The smallest box (seen on the left) is empty but that's ok. There is time. Besides, it would be far too optimistic to hope for all three to be utilised in year one.
