The Wild Olive | Eating out in the Lake District
Monday, May 18, 2015Can anything beat a proper pizza, handmade and cooked in a pizza oven? I would argue not.
Whilst away on our weekend in the Lake District a few weeks ago we ate out a couple of times. Being forever dubious about the chances of walking in off the street and getting a table, I phoned ahead the week before to make a reservation. I'm glad I did, as the restaurant was full by the time we left (and this was on a Friday evening).
The Wild Olive is an unexpected find for the village of Gosforth (near Wastwater) but I'm really pleased we ate there. We both drank some elderflower soft beverage and water while mulling over the menu choices. We didn't really know what to expect n terms of portion sizes as we didn't see any pizza go past before we ordered and so (somewhat naively) we ordered starters. I went for the chicken liver pate and ciabatta while Chris chose garlic and chilli king prawns. My pate was served in a cute teacup and there was a LOT of it, even after generously spreading it on the toast I did have some left over. C loved his prawns (I tried not to look).
The pizzas were large! When they arrived my heart sank a little, knowing that I would have a job finishing it off (as it turned out I did, but was definitely too full). My choice of ham and pineapple was somewhat predictable and C ordered a pizza with lots of meat on it... of course we had also ordered sides of garlic bread and wedges... Yes, definitely a case of not thinking straight when ordering. My pizza was amazing; delicious and perfect and everything I love about a proper pizza. The wedges were simply amazing; flame baked and served with a garlic mayonnaise. I could have eaten a whole plateful.
Such a fab place to eat out, the atmosphere was lively kind of like a pub in that respect and definitely the place to eat out if you're with friends. The Wild Olive, I'll be back.

Apologies for awful photos, indoors at low light never works for me!
