The dark days of January

Friday, January 05, 2018

The first few weeks of the new year are usually the darkest. After the high of Christmas (and the blissfully empty time off) comes the brunt of the dark, cold weather with little respite or hope. The days of January and February are the worst for me, with the despair in March if it doesn't show brash signs of becoming spring-like soon enough. The sun is already wandering back toward the west by early afternoon and there's often no sign of it all day. Desolate landscapes powder coated in grey. Death valley and death mountain.

I reluctantly admit that the evenings seem to get pitch black fractionally later but it's not happening fast enough. I'm still not ready to talk about resolutions but my heart's not in it to get them typed up. Maybe next week.
Take care,

  1. I like to take my time with resolutions, this year I decided earlier than most because they are simple - spend time with my favourite people, and do things that make me smile. And decorate.
I'm trying to find things that make me smile in these dark months. One of them is that each evening, as it gets dark, I close the curtains in the bedroom and turn on the lamp. It makes it feel really cosy and it's ready for when we go to bed. I don't know why this makes me smile but I love doing it. I've bought cheerful flowers for the lounge to try and combat the bare feeling that comes once the tree is down.
Spring will be here soon xx

  2. Still plenty to see, spring wildflowers are already emerging, my favourite few months of the year

  3. I know what you mean about the darkness - I don't mind it at Christmas but even though when I left work today it was only 95% dark instead of pitch black like it was before Christmas, it still feels like we have a long way to go!
